Planting instructions:

  • Timing: Plant Tall Fescue in early fall or early spring for best results. Avoid planting during the hottest months of summer.
  • Soil preparation: Prepare the soil by removing any debris and loosening it to a depth of 4-6 inches. Tall Fescue can tolerate a wide range of soil types but prefers well-draining soil with a pH of 5.5-7.0.
  • Seedbed preparation: Rake the area to create a smooth surface. Remove any rocks, sticks, or other debris.
  • Seeding: Spread the Tall Fescue seeds evenly over the prepared soil using a seed spreader. Aim for a seeding rate of 6-8 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
  • Covering: Lightly rake the seeds into the soil to ensure good soil contact. Do not bury the seeds too deep; a light covering of soil is sufficient.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist until the seeds germinate, usually within 10-14 days. Water lightly and frequently to prevent the soil from drying out.
  • Maintenance: Once the grass reaches a height of 3-4 inches, mow it to a height of 2-3 inches. Tall Fescue requires less frequent watering than other grasses once established but may benefit from occasional deep watering during dry spells.
  • Establishment: Tall Fescue typically establishes quickly, but it’s important to avoid heavy foot traffic until the grass has fully matured.

With proper care and maintenance, Tall Fescue Variety of Wisconsin will provide a resilient, low-maintenance lawn that can withstand the challenges of the Wisconsin climate.
